World’s First All Rubber Speakers
Ever heard (or thought) of a rubber speaker? Well, Japan is all set to give us another world’s first technology. Japan-based Tokai Rubber Industries carried out a demo of the world’s first rubber speaker. The speaker uses a special kind of rubber called Smart Rubber, which is capable of conducting electricity. The speaker can expand and contract to generate the sound waves.
So far speakers were all piezoelectric and film types, however, these speakers were incapable of producing lower frequencies. But with the new rubber speakers, it would not be an issue any longer as they can produce lower frequencies as well.
The setup consists of two rubber electrodes sandwiching a non-conductive rubber. When sufficient voltage is applied across the conducting rubber electrodes, static electricity is produced causing the non conductive rubber sheet to expand. Sound waves can thus be produced through repeated expansion and contraction of the rubber sheet, Crazy Engineer reports.
This new technology enables rubber electrodes to have a static charge over the surface. In addition, the insulating rubber sheet shouldn’t change its resistance when it is expanded, the report stated.
While the company has still not figured out the clear roadmap for this new product, they are conducting surveys and talking to potential customers for their new product.
